About Barbara
Barbara Peters is a Registered Nurse and a Licensed Professional Counselor. Barbara has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, a Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing and a Master of Sciences in Counseling. Certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors and a member of The Licensed Professional Counselors of Georgia, she has worked in diverse mental health settings: psychiatric hospitals, managed behavioral health organizations, and Employee Assistance consulting firms. As a nurse and a counselor, Barbara brings additional expertise to view the client from both an emotional and physical perspective, thus providing a truly comprehensive assessment. As appropriate, she will be able to coordinate care with any medical provider, having a thorough understanding of the interplay between the mental health and medical components of problems. "I am originally from Long Island New York, but have been living in Georgia since 1986. During this time I have made Georgia my home and am married to a true Southern gentleman. I have been in the Cumming area for 5 years, actively invested in keeping up with the community and it's needs. The family institution is of great value to me as I enjoy my 2 grown daughters, 4 grandchildren, and a Shih Tzu. In fact, Gingerlily often accompanies me to work. My main passion is working with couples, utilizing a solution-focused approach with an optimistic outlook and seeing them develop a better relationship. I also work with individuals in a variety of areas. My counseling style is interactive, respectful, non-judgmental and supportive. With gentle questioning, I help people get in touch with their own values and ideals and gain trust in themselves to make decisions for a better lifestyle. Some of my hobbies include: spending time with my grandchildren, traveling, tennis, bowling, hiking and enjoying the outdoors. I also enjoy driving my Miata around the mountains of north Georgia and am a member of The Peachtree Miata Club."
